Commissioner Confirms Lack of EU Council Agreement on Economic Measures

Calls for Urgent Action to Address Inflation and Energy Crisis

Brussels, Belgium - European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni has addressed the European Parliament in an audition to discuss pressing economic concerns facing the European Union. Following the hearing, Gentiloni confirmed that the EU Council has yet to reach a consensus on proposed economic measures, and he called for urgent action to tackle the challenges posed by inflation and the energy crisis.

"We are facing a very difficult situation, with inflation rising to unprecedented levels and the energy crisis weighing heavily on our economies," Gentiloni stated. "It is essential that we act now to protect our citizens and businesses." The Commissioner outlined several measures that he believes are necessary, including fiscal support for vulnerable households and businesses, investments in renewable energy, and a common approach to the gas market.

Gentiloni also expressed concern about the potential impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the EU economy. "The war is causing uncertainty and disruption, and it is essential that we work together to mitigate its effects," he said. The Commissioner called for a coordinated response from EU member states, including increased defense spending and support for Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.

The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on a resolution addressing Gentiloni's proposals next week. The outcome of the vote will shape the EU's economic policy agenda in the coming months.
